A moderate quake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the Izu island chain south of Tokyo on Sunday, the Meteorological Agency said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The tremor occurred at 14:18 IST with its epicentre 150 kilometers south of Tokyo and 20 kilometers under the Pacific. No tsunami was expected, the agency said.
Japan lies at the junction of four tectonic plates and has about 20 per cent of the world's powerful earthquakes, frequently jolting Tokyo and other major cities.
