A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled islands near New Ireland in northeastern Papua New Guinea on Monday morning, the US Geological Survey said.

The subsea quake took place at 12.24 am on Monday 95 kilometres southeast of Taron, New Ireland, and 855 kilometres northeast of Port Moresby in the Solomon Sea.
The epicentre was at a depth of 35 kilometres below the Earth's surface.
