Moharram passess off peacefully

Moharram was observed throughout the district on Thursday with members of the Shia community laying to rest the ? tazias? in different graveyards of the city and its outskirts.

Only stray clashes reported in city

Moharram was observed throughout the district on Thursday with members of the Shia community laying to rest the ‘ tazias’ in different graveyards of the city and its outskirts.

The processions continued till late last night with reports of stray incidents of protests from different parts of the district.

Lakhs of people participated in the Moharram processions. Members of the minority community closed their shops and business establishments in mourning.

Tazias of Bhelupur and Reoritalab were buried in Shivala area while tazias of Dal Mandi, Nari Sarak, Ordelybazar, Jaitpura, Aurangabad and Hukulganj were buried in the Fatiman graveyard.

Elaborate security arrangements had been made in several sensitive places in the city for the Moharram processions.

Meanwhile, members of two groups clashed over cooling of a tazia with Ganga water at Shivala ghat on Thursday afternoon. Three persons were injured in the clash. Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.

Tension gripped Ramnagar area for some time when Muslims staged a demonstration at Ramnagar crossing following a land dispute.

All tazias of Ramnagar were halted for nearly two hours in support of the demand for prompt settlement of the dispute. Normalcy was soon restored by the administration.
