Monsoon fury: Hamirpur suffered Rs 363-cr loss

The centrally located district of Hamirpur has suffered a huge loss worth Rs 363.53 crore due to the monsoon fury by the end of August 30. One person lost his life due to falling of debris on his house and a compensation of Rs 25,000 was paid to the next of kin of the deceased.
The district received 1,547.23 mm of rain since June 17 and it was still hoping to have more rain before the monsoon season ends.
The district receives about 1,225 mm of rainfall annually. Most of the rainfall is received from June to September. The present trend of rainfall is an indication that the district is likely to cross its annual target of rainfall in 2013.
Sources on Wednesday said the total loss to kharif crops was estimated to be around Rs 1 crore so far and an area of 1,017.50 hectares was damaged due to heavy rain and floods.
He said in all 402 houses and cowsheds were damaged and total loss to the crops and private property was around Rs 5.66 crore.
Sources said the rain onslaught caused much damage to the roads in the district and total loss to the roads was around Rs 348.38 crore. Rain and landslides caused damage to 341 roads during the current monsoon season.
Similarly, there was a net loss of about Rs 8 crore to the water supply schemes and Rs 1.45 crore to the power supply structures in the district.
He said rain fury was reported from all parts of the district this time. However, major losses were reported from areas of Sujanpur, Bhoranj and Nadaun.
Souces said the district administration was sending the reports of loss to the state government on daily basis and demanding more funds for the restoration of the roads, culverts, water supply schemes and the power supply structures.
He said the state government had assured the district administration that adequate funds would be provided to them as relief measures in all parts of the district.
