Monsoon star fashion
You may simply opt for Bermudas and a T-shirt in the rainy season. But what do stars do to tackle the rain lashes while making a style statement? Nilufer Qureshi polls movie heroes.Updated: Jun 16, 2008 11:45 IST
Okay, so you may roll up your trousers, simply opt for Bermudas and a T-shirt to tackle the rain lashes and stay dry. Style changes during the monsoon months.. it becomes in-your-face eclectic.. anything goes. But in this jumble-sale-look scenario, there’s a constant in menswear. Indeed, the jacket is the style statement of the season. Nilufer Qureshi polls movie heroes.
While the nipple-revealing transparent shirts seen on many catwalks are best avoided, the effect created by the classic white shirt (some opt for a white vest, aieeee) still scores. No florid florals are in this season, for menswear, thank the lord. Neither are plaids and checks. Splashes of intense colour to break the monotony of white-black-and-greys are favoured by some of the glitterati.. but only a few can carry off the colour splashes without looking attention seeking.
On talking to frontline actors, one thing is clear.. as soon as the pressure of the summer heat is off, it’s the cue to go for the jacket kill. Designer labels are coveted of course.. but at the end of the day, a pair of blue jeans and a casual jacket tote up the highest marks among the star set.
In their own words:
I am not fashion conscious at all. I prefer to be in my jeans and a vest. But if I have to go for a function, then I just wear a jacket on top of a vest. It becomes a semi-formal outfit that I’m comfortable with. I don’t own many jackets but I’d love to. I prefer comfort over designer labels. A black jacket on a pair of jeans and white vest is really cool.. particularly from June to January.. when the temperatures aren’t murderous.
My style statement is anything that doesn’t demand attention. I generally wear blue jeans with a shirt or a kurta. I’m told I am a style icon but I have never believed in running after labels. Yes, my suits are branded but that’s only because I like their cuts and finish. I own many jackets. I have jackets for formal occasions and casual ones too. I have only long jackets.. no short ones till the waist. During the rains, I don’t have any hassles if my suits or jackets get wet.. what’s the big deal.. (laughs) they all dry up eventually, don’t they? I really find it funny when some worry about their jackets getting affected in a bit of drizzle.
I’ve inherited my passion for jackets from my dad. As a kid, I would see my dad looking awesome in them.. and I’d tell myself that I’d wear them some day.. if I could look half as good as him. I own more jackets than I own suits. I shop for my jackets abroad. If my brother and I go shopping, we end up buying similar jackets. Most jackets are worn over a T-shirt or shirt.. which is what I’m opting for now that the weather is cooler.
Ha ha, to be a style icon does have its pressures. Jokes apart, I know what to wear and when. Around the year, you will never find me wearing something I can’t carry off or look awkard in. Style is all about personality and comfort. I shop for my clothes abroad and I spend a packet on what I buy. For my films, my clothes are styled by Shahid Aamir.. he has helped me a lot. My taste reflects in what I wear. I wear a jacket over a casual pair of linen trousers and I can dance in them in the garden for a shot. For parties, I have a whole lot of casual jackets that add attitude. For premieres and functions it’s generally a pair of blue jeans or cargos with a jacket over a vest or shirt. The moment you wear a formal jacket over a pair of jeans it changes your entire appearance. It’s more classy and stylish. I am all for jackets over jeans during the monsoon.
Saif Ali Khan
I’m told that I am stylish, have attitude and can carry off what I wear. But I have never thought — if I wear this will people call me stylish? For me it’s all about being subtle. My style statement is a pair of jeans and T-shirt or shirt. For weddings and events I do wear a suit or a blazer over a pair of blue jeans. There is nothing more stylish than blue jeans, a white shirt and a black jacket. Right now, I’d love to get into a light linen jacket
I am not a clothes horse. I wear what I feel like.. without much fuss. My appearance isn’t carefully planned. At premieres and wedding receptions, it’s generally blue jeans with a white T-shirt – or shirt — with a black jacket or blazer. Casual jackets are for parties and press conferences. I buy my clothes abroad and yes many of them are labels. That’s because they fit me perfectly. I don’t buy a label for effect. I like jackets because they add that extra bit to your personality.. during summer, they look weird on you.. but as soon as the weather goes below 30 deg. C, it’s time to go for them.
Thanks to my modelling days, I am clued into fashion and what I can carry off. You can carry off any outfit provided you are confident about what you are wearing. I shop only when I travel abroad and yes I shop for labels. I have a collection of jackets. My favourite, of course is blue jeans with a white vest or a white shirt with a black jacket. I have jackets in other solid colours too. Trust me a jacket over a pair of jeans can enhance your outfit. I have casual long jackets which are cool for day wear. A formal jacket is very different from what you would wear to a restaurant with friends. You have to know what to wear, when and how. During the summer, it’s white and light colours.. during the cooler months, of course, jackets in darker colours are the thing.
