There was brief commotion among devotees during the holy dip in Mandakini river on the occasion of 'Somvati Amavasya' when the body of a new-born girl was found at Ramghat in Chitrakoot on Monday morning. Police took out the body and sent for autopsy to know the reason of her death.
According to police, this could be a case of female infanticide as no complaint of missing child has been lodged anywhere in and around Chitrakoot.
Satna superintendent of police Irshad Wali said, "Doctors are trying to find out whether the body was disposed of or thrown in the river. Police have registered a case and investigating into the matter."
Wali ruled out any possibility of drowning of the child saying ghats are under tight security. Thousands of pilgrims haver gathered at Kamtanath Pahad temple in Chitakoot for three-day holy fair held on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya.
