The Sidhi district collector has issued a show-cause notice to a miner asking as to why a penalty of Rs 247 crore should not be imposed on him for illegal mining.

A raid was conducted at a stone mining site near Bahri town about 15 days ago, collector Vishesh Garhpale said, adding the Shiv Shakti Company’s owner failed to produce the documents needed to carry out mining.

The notice was served on Monday evening. "During the course of investigation, it was found that the miner was mining illegally on government land for the last few years. It was estimated that about 16.5 lakh tonne of stones were mined during the period," Garhpale said.

One JCB and other earth moving equipment were seized in the raid.
