Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday had a "routine" medical check up in the US and was given "a clean chit," a senior Pakistani minister said, seeking to scotch speculation in a section of the media that the general underwent an open-heart surgery.

Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani said Musharraf underwent the "routine" medical check up at Paris Regional Medial Centre in Dallas, Texas, and was given a "clean chit".

"The president is fighting fit," the minister told a press conference here, rejecting speculation in Pakistani media about Musharraf's health.

Durrani said the President, who is scheduled to release his book In the Line with Fire on Monday, was back at home after the "heart-related and general check up" and was in perfect health to go through the rest of his engagements in the US visit.

The check up was pre-scheduled, he added.

Earlier in Islamabad, a government spokesman also said that the check up was routine and denied reports of Musharraf undergoing a heart surgery.

The spokesman described as "incorrect and unfounded" the reports in a section of the media that the President underwent an open heart surgery, Pakistan's state-run APP news agency reported.
