MUSICIAN NAGEEN Tanvir has received the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for composing music in ‘Crossings’— an experimental piece exploring the various facets of Lady Macbeth.
‘Crossings’ was one of the eight presentations at the four-day theatre festival organised by Mahindra & Mahindra at Delhi from February 6. The award for the Best Innovative Sound Design carries a memento and a cheque of Rs 33,215.
‘Crossings’ is a blend of theatre and dance; traditional and innovative dance choreography. The concept by director Vikram Iyengar is new and in one of the scenes he has tried to make connections between Kali and Lady Macbeth to personify Shakti.
He is a promising Kathak dancer trained under Rani Karna and his work has spanned choreography for stage and film, dance theatre and performance collaborations. Nageen has composed ‘Tarana’ in Mishra Darbari Kanhra which is the theme song of ‘Crossings’.
She has also used folk music from Central India such as Bundelkhandi folk songs. Tribal songs from Mandla and Bastar have also been used to suit the different moods in the production.
The other crew members are Anubha Fatehpuria (actress), Archana Ramaswamy (Bharat Natyam and Odissi dancer), Debashree Bhattacharya (Kathak dancer), Suman Sarawgi (Manipuri dancer), Siddhartha Bhattacharya (percussionist) and Naveen Kishore (lighting designer).
Daughter of world-renowned theatre personality Habib Tanvir, Nageen has received classical vocal training from Kumari Sharbori Mukherjee, Deepti Nag and Sulochana Brahaspati. She did her B Music (vocal) from M S University, Baroda, and has a Master’s degree in vocal music from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Nageen has performed in Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theatre productions.
She is at present working on a Government of India Fellowship project exploring the traditional music of Chhattisgarh.
