Addressing a rally in Silchar, Yechuri said the government was claiming that it was "successful on all fronts but the fact was that at present the country bears a hefty loan and had to pay crores of rupees as interest from various institutions".

He alleged that six lakh industries were closed during the NDA regime and nine lakh employees became jobless and the Prime Minister's promise that one crore jobs will be created every year has "failed".

Describing the Lok Sabha election as crucial for the people of the country, the CPI (M) leader alleged that the "rich had become richer and the poor pushed closer to death" in the last five years.

The CPI (M) leader is in town to campaign for his party's candidate Nurul Huda contesting the Silchar Lok Sabha seat that goes to poll on May 10.
