Need to change attitude towards special children

FACULTY MEMBER of the Psychology Department in Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Banaras Hindu University, Prof Sandhya Singh Kaushik, has stressed the need for attitudinal change in parents and teachers towards modification of the behaviour of mentally retarded children.

FACULTY MEMBER of the Psychology Department in Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Banaras Hindu University, Prof Sandhya Singh Kaushik, has stressed the need for attitudinal change in parents and teachers towards modification of the behaviour of mentally retarded children.

She was delivering a lecture on ‘Behavioral Interventions for Mentally Retarded’ during the concluding day of the three-day national seminar and workshop on ‘Early Identification, Intervention and Curricular Needs of Children with Special Needs’ at the Education Faculty of BHU in Kamachcha area here on Tuesday.

Prof Kaushik focused on the detailed analysis of the behaviour of mentally retarded children to identify their mal-adaptive behaviours and said that such identification should be done before the age of 18 years. She further elaborated the guidelines based on the principles of learning, giving more emphasis on the reinforcement of their behaviour to make their behaviour more pro-social.

Later, around 25 participants presented their papers on various issues associated with the children of special needs. Dr Anjali Bajpai conducted the programme whereas organising secretary and former dean of Education faculty, Prof Asha Pandey welcomed the guests. Dr Rashmi Chaudhary proposed the vote of thanks.

Prominent among others who were present on the occasion included Dean of Education faculty, Prof SB Bhattacharya, Prof PC Shukla, Prof HCS Rathore, Dr Prem Shanker Ram and Dr Deepa Mehta.
