“The allegation regarding Kumar’s links with Abhishek Verma appears baseless. No evidence has been produced to establish this allegation,” said the home ministry affidavit filed in the court by its lawyer Sumeet Pushkarna.

The affidavit was filed in response to a public interest litigation seeking quashing of the appointment of Kumar as Delhi police commissioner.

Kumar’s alleged links with Verma was one of the ground cited by the petition filed by MG Devasahayam, a Chennai-based retired IAS officer. The allegation had also been raised by Aam Admi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

“It is pertinent to mention that Verma was an approver in a case which was being investigated by Kumar when he was posted as joint director CBI and therefore, as approver, Verma is bound to have known the controlling officer of the case who happened to be Kumar.

But that does not mean that the controlling officer is in any way complicit with the approver,” said the home ministry affidavit.
