FEMALE JUNIOR residents and girls enrolled in PG courses at KGMU would face accommodation problem.

Their joining is due from May 2, but the varsity authorities have refused to take possession of two newly constructed hostels, stating the buildings are unsafe for girls.

The objection is not to construction quality but to the line of construction. And the objection to the security of girls’ hostel has been raised by none other the varsity proctor, who is responsible for overall security of students.

Proctor Prof VK Singh has refused to take charge of the newly constructed New Lady Resident Hostel and is not satisfied with the boundary wall of the new extension building of the VL Hostel.

“The construction agency told us that the building was complete. But, since the boundary wall of the New LRH was missing I have refused to take charge of hostel building. Similarly, the boundary of VL hostel extension building has been fenced with iron grills and not by a brick wall,” Prof Singh said, adding: “there was no privacy for hostel residents with iron grills as anyone can peep into the rooms through them.”

The varsity authorities plan to accommodate families of resident doctors on the ground floor of the New LRH and use other floors for single occupancy. But with no boundary wall there could not be a check on the persons visiting or leaving the hostel premises.

The proctor has made the construction agency clear that unless proper construction is done the handover would not be done for new hostel buildings.

Security at girls’ hostel has always been under controversy and there have been several attempts by intruders to cross over the boundary. Hostel wardens have lodged several complaints of threat perceptions to girls in the past one-year.

Even if a boundary wall gets constructed at New LRH and iron grills are replaced with brick wall at New VL it would take a fortnight before the girls get in.
