Delivering a lecture on ‘Transition to Deregulated Power Market: Role of Regulatory Agencies’ on the second day of the two-day international conference on ‘Power System Operation in Deregulated Regime’ at Swatantrata Bhawan in Banaras Hindu University here, he said, “The experience of new technologies used in thermal generation in China and South Africa has shown that the price of thermally-generated power has come down.”

The Electrical Engineering Department of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University had organised the conference in collaboration with the National Power Training Institute and Powergrid Corporation of India Limited.

Ailavadi said just as the benefit of new wireless technology in the telecom sector had not only benefited the customers but also helped in increasing tele-density to 11.7 per cent in just about three years, the same could happen in thermal generation costs.

“It is believed by experts that even after discounting the cost of super critical technology absorption, the prices of generated power per unit would come down by 20 to 25 per cent in the medium term,” he said.

Besides various papers in the area of power system automation, advanced technologies, utility experiences, restructuring of the power sector and availability-based tariff, challenging issues of deregulated power network and distributed generation in integrated power network along with intelligent operation of power network and protection were also discussed by several eminent experts today.

Convener of the conference and faculty member in Electrical Engineering Department (IT-BHU) Dr. RK Pandey conducted the programme. Delegates from various agencies such as National Thermal Power Corporation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, L&T, Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi, Mumbai, Madras, Guwahati, Kharagpur), BITS (Pilani) and Jadavpur University participated in the conference.
