Cable TV operators in Srinagar on Tuesday stopped beaming several entertainment and news channels following a threat from the little-known Al Madina Regiment militant group that had warned them to stop operations in the Kashmir Valley.

"We have stopped airing AXN, Star Movies, Star World and Reality TV in view of the threat from the militant outfit," a cable operator said on condition of anonymity. However, he said the operators had no plan to stop airing other channels.

All cable TV services across the city were disrupted for almost two hours from 12.30 pm on Tuesday. When services resumed, selected entertainment channels and all news channels were blacked out.

The cable operator said the services were disrupted by a "technical snag".

The Al-Madina Regiment had on Saturday issued a warning to cable operators to shut their operations within 10 days or "face the consequences".

Holding cable TV responsible for all evils in society, the outfit, which carried out several grenade attacks in the city last year, alleged that cable operators were airing obscene programmes.

Several cable operators were killed and their establishments attacked in the past by militant outfits.
