The government on Friday made it clear that it has no intention to close down post offices and instead was aiming to reach out to the maximum number of people.

Intervening during a debate on post offices in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Technology Shakeel Ahmed said the decision to close down six post offices in the Northeast was taken at the behest of the previous NDA regime which had recommended their closure.

"We do not nourish any desire to close down any post office, especially in the Northeastern region because the government subsidises us for the same. It was the previous NDA regime which had recommended their closure," he said.

The Minister said the government was apprehending a loss of Rs 1100 crore to Rs 1800 crore but we will meet it.
