The Left is against India’s N-weapon programme. The separation of India’s civilian and military nuclear facilities is bound to retard the progress of the programme. Then why is the Left opposing the deal? It seems they understand that it is in India’s interest to have more nuclear power plants. The protests against George Bush demonstrate the Left’s inability to balance ideology with what clearly must be done.

President Bush’s historic visit is against the backdrop of India becoming an economic force to reckon with. The agreement on nuclear cooperation is another milestone in Indo-US relations.

The protest against Bush’s visit makes little sense. There is no point in confronting the president of the world’s mot powerful nation. In being hospitable, we do our country more good than armchair analysts will ever understand.

Both the US president and our prime minister must be congratulated for carrying through the nuclear deal. The nation has full confidence that the PM will safeguard India’s interests. It is a really positive step that India will have access to superior US nuclear civilian technology.

Hats off, skipper

I agree with Jaideep Ghosh’s Sour pitch (February 27) that we should not deny Sourav Ganguly the respect he deserves. We must not forget that it is Sourav’s on recommendation that Greg Chappell became India’s cricket coach. What hurts is the ill-treatment he has to face from the selectors. Sourav can still contribute but that is possible only if selectors rise above petty politics.

Everything’s gone up

The Union Budget 2006 is not at all people-friendly. It is a coalition-budget. It is an inflationary budget in which prices of almost all essential commodities shall go up because of the hike in service tax rates.
