No takers for PGI deputy chief?s post?

IF THE government does not fill up the post of additional director at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) soon, then it may only be a matter of time that most people at the institute become oblivious to the post?s existence.

The post is not just a titular one; it is a significant post in the administrative set up and functioning of this top-of-the-line super-specialty medical research institute.

The post exists under the Section 9 Chaa of the SGPGIMS Act, 1983, which provides for an IAS officer to hold the post.

The top administrative posts comprise the director from the medical fraternity and additional director from the civil services.

An institute observer says, “Both posts serve as a mechanism of ‘checks-and-balances’ in the institute’s administrative set up. All movement of files used to be through the additional director’s office.”

In the last session of the House, the chief minister had favoured the appointment and had said the government would think about appointing the additional director.

However, the post continues to be vacant. Between 2003 and 2005 four people took over the post and left—one of them stayed only for a week, another for three months, yet another for three months. And since the fag end of 2005, the post has remained vacant.

The last IAS officer that functioned as PGI additional director was Anita Meshram.

A section of the PGI staff avers that without an IAS officer remaining on the post has led to widespread mismanagement at the institute.
