Nuclear capability only a deterrent: Kalam

Stressing that India's nuclear programme was meant for peaceful purposes, President Kalam stated that the country's nuclear weapon capability was only a deterrent.

Stressing that India's nuclear programme was meant for peaceful purposes, President A P J Abdul Kalam stated that the country's nuclear weapon capability was only a deterrent.

"India is a peaceful country and will never use nukes against others," said Kalam when he was asked about the purpose of making such weapons of mass destruction during his interaction with about 1,000 children at Raj Bhavan.

"We also cannot sit idle when other countries have such weapons. The N-bomb has been made to protect our border or in other words- for our defence," said the President.
