Come 2007 and ace spinner Anil Kumble will venture into another field. The cricketer has been roped in to play a key role as himself in Pritish Nandy Communications’ Meerabai Not Out.

Chandrakant Kulkarni, a veteran theatre personality and director of Marathi films like Bindhaast, Bhet and Kaaydyaacha Bola will make his Hindi film debut with this project that has Mandira Bedi in the title role.

“The film is about a cricket crazy math teacher,” says Kulkarni about Meerabai Not Out, scripted by Soumik Sen. But Kulkarni is not divulging the role Kumble will play, for, “that would be revealing the plot of the film.” It also stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Anupam Kher and Vandana Gupte.

The music will be composed by Sandesh Shandilya.

The idea came from Bedi’s husband Raj Kaushal, who wanted to cast her in a film on cricket.
