The government is dismantling barriers by creating the right ecosystem to help increase digital literacy in India, minister of state for IT and communications Sachin Pilot said in a panel discussion at the Digital Literacy Conclave organised by Hindustan Times on Wednesday.

The government has chalked out plans to connect 250,000 gram panchayats through an fibreoptic network, which would increase broadband connectivity, he said, adding, "We want to create an India where at least each individual in a family is digitally literate."

As a first step to attain this objective, a pilot-project has been initiated in which Bharat Broadband Network Ltd (BBNL), a special purpose vehicle set up for this purpose, will lay down 500,000 km of fibreoptic cables in Tripura, Vizag and Ajmer. BSNL, Power Grid and RailTel will assist BBNL in this project.

Other panellists at the conclave included Debjani Ghosh, managing director, Intel South Asia; Sanjay Kapoor, CEO Airtel (India & South Asia); Rajendra Pawar, chairman of NIIT Group Osama Manzar, founder and director, Digital Empowerment Foundation and Som Mittal, president, Nasscom.

A consensus was reached to have a Digital Literacy Week that would help spread awareness about broadband and digital literacy, and how an individual could leverage Internet to add quality in life.
