One killed in election violence

ONE PERSON was killed and over a dozen were injured in violence during block pramukh polls on Monday. Following reports of violation of the model code of conduct on Monday, the State Election Commission postponed the election in three blocks in Kushinagar district. These blocks are Kaptanganj, Kasya and Ramkola. With this, the election has been postponed in 15 blocks so far.

ONE PERSON was killed and over a dozen were injured in violence during block pramukh polls on Monday.

Following reports of violation of the model code of conduct on Monday, the State Election Commission postponed the election in three blocks in Kushinagar district. These blocks are Kaptanganj, Kasya and Ramkola. With this, the election has been postponed in 15 blocks so far.

The State Election Commission had earlier postponed polling in a dozen blocks following complaints of kidnapping and rigging.

Reports said supporters of two candidates exchanged fire in Vidhuna block of Auraiya district.

One person was killed and two police vehicles were set afire by a mob. The district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police had a narrow escape, as anti-social elements opened fire on policemen.

Two groups exchanged fire in Janura block of Mainpuri district after 51 votes were polled.

Additional police personnel were rushed to the spot to control the situation.
The family members of dacoit Dadua beat up supporters of a candidate who was declared the winner from a block in Chitrakoot district. Dadua’s brother-in-law lost the election to Dinesh Mihra by one vote.

Under pressure from Dadua, the returning officer did not officially declare the election result.

At Basti, supporters of BSP candidate Sobha Singh staged a road blockade and damaged vehicles parked on the premises of the counting station. Sobha polled 25 votes and  SP candidate Gita Yadav polled 24 votes.

Supporters of candidates clashed in Bareilly district. Candidates alleged poll personnel were allowing supporters of the Samajwadi Party candidate to indulge in bogus voting. The angry candidates of the rival political party blocked the road and pelted officials with stones.

One Anand Pal was injured in firing between two groups in Jasrana area of Bareilly district.
