OoP Bill to be discussed in LS next week

The Secretary General laid a copy of the legislation, passed by the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

After its passage in the Rajya Sabha, Government on Friday set in motion the process of reconsideration of the controversial Office-of-Profit Bill in the Lok Sabha.

The Secretary General laid a copy of the legislation, passed by the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, along with the message of the President while sending back the measure for reconsideration.

It will be taken up next week in the House.

The Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2006, passed by Parliament on May 17 with the Rajya Sabha approving it, was returned by President APJ Abdul Kalam by the end of May.

The Bill had gone for a re-look in the Rajya Sabha first as it was the Upper House which had finally approved the legislation before it was sent to the President for his assent.

After the President returned the Bill with a message for reconsideration, the Union Cabinet met and decided to move the Bill in its original form.
