Oral anti-diabetic agents discovered

DR GEETA Watal, Reader, Department of Chemistry, University of Allahabad, has invented two highly effective novel oral anti-diabetic agents for mild and severe diabetic patients.

DR GEETA Watal, Reader, Department of Chemistry, University of Allahabad, has invented two highly effective novel oral anti-diabetic agents for mild and severe diabetic patients.

She is actively engaged in her research and continuously exploring a number of medicinal plants in order to get better and improved oral medication for type-II diabetes mellitus.

Recently, the National Medicinal Plant Board, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has approved her project and sanctioned Rs 22.50 lakh for the same. Results similar to her work in case of Murraya Koenigii plant have subsequently been observed by Prof Houghton of King's College London.

Dr Geeta Watal had already published this work in international journal of high impact and she has filed for patents in India and in United States.

Dr Watal has been invited by the American Society of Pharmacognosy to present her work in their annual meet of 2006 going to be held at Arlington, Virginia USA on August 9, 2006.

She has left Allahabad for New York on June 4 for her collaborative research programmes at New York State University and Xe-Chem International. Her on-going collaborative research programmes in India are with ACBR, DU, and All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, funded by Indian Council of Medical Research. Her research group comprises of Dr Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Dr Achyut Narayan Kesari, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, Amit Kumar, Dolly Jaiswal, Prashant Kumar Rai and Rakesh Kumar Singh.
