Truck driver Hari Dayal, who was assaulted by a mob in Sundargarh district on Thursday after his speeding vehicle ran over a woman, succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

The accident took place under the Kutra police station limits of Sundargarh. The truck driver was beaten with iron rods and sticks for nearly half-an-hour till he lost consciousness. The police came to the scene after Dayal had lost consciousness and admitted him to a hospital, but the driver did not regain his consciousness and died the next day.

This is the second case of lynching in Sundargarh district in less than a week.

Five days ago, Abzal Khan, an alleged molester, was beaten to death near Rourkela by a group of villagers. Before being beaten to death, Abzal was tied to a pole for about an hour and tortured in various ways. Khan’s friend, who was also assaulted, has claimed that the allegations are false and it was actually the outcome of an old enmity.

Last month, a mob tied the hands and legs of four alleged fuel thieves with ropes in Keonjhar district and made them kneel on the road with fuel jars hanging from their necks.
