It is unfortunate that the HRD Ministry is putting a check on IIM Bangalore’s plan of setting up a branch in Singapore (Going up in chalkdust, January 17). Education reform must aim at unshackling our universities and other institutions of higher learning as well as projects to promote private and foreign investment in this sector. It is hoped that the government will allow IIM Bangalore to establish India’s name for excellence in education.

II

I support the HRD Ministry’s decision to refuse IIM Bangalore’s request for an overseas campus. While the IIMs seem unable to open new campuses in India or increase their intake, the enthusiasm to start an offshore campus is nothing short of being merely a revenue generating exercise. There is an urgent need to have at least one IIM in every state to fulfil the dreams of aspiring students.

For some road space

Apropos of the editorial Road to perdition (January 17), I think road rage will be a thing of the past if only we give space on the roads and have concern for fellow motorists. Road rage is a fallout of strident egos. Civil behaviour is inexpensive but most valuable for our own health and happiness.

Support the drive

The move against corrupt parliamentarians and the demolition drive in Delhi have received wide public support. This is a good chance for the Delhi government to discipline its lawless citizens. Corruption has reached such a level that nothing can get done without greasing palms.

Honest politicians should also support the court’s directive and facilitate the demolition drive without allowing selfish interests to influence them.

Remove the disparity

Prem Shankar Jha rightly talks about the growing disparity between the poor and rich (Multiplying divisions, Jan. 16). There is an increasing gap in the incomes of people even from the same social stratum. The government must urgently arrest this trend.
