A WELL-INTENTIONED government scheme is becoming a victim of corrupt practices. That?s what happening with the ?Kanyadhan Yojana?, which offers Rs 20,000 to girl students belonging to the poorer section of the society for continuing their studies. The office of the District Inspector of Schools (DIoS) is finding it difficult to ascertain the claims of girl applicants for the project.
A WELL-INTENTIONED government scheme is becoming a victim of corrupt practices. That’s what happening with the ‘Kanyadhan Yojana’, which offers Rs 20,000 to girl students belonging to the poorer section of the society for continuing their studies. The office of the District Inspector of Schools (DIoS) is finding it difficult to ascertain the claims of girl applicants for the project.
According to DIoS sources, out of the 22,000 girl students who had cleared the Intermediate examination this year, 14,000 have applied for the ‘Kanyadhan Yojana’. They have claimed to belong to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
But a screening of their applications has stunned DIoS officers. It has been found that many of these applicants are private school students but they have furnished income certificates to show that their family earnings ranged between Rs 18,000- 35,000 per annum. It was also detected that over 2000 of the income certificates were fake.
Although they submitted proof to claim their low-income group status, these girl students take education in private schools and spent more than Rs 1,000 towards monthly school and bus fees.
However, DIoS SP Diwedi said many applications had been forwarded to the Finance Department after proper screening. He said the Finance Department would issue cheques to the beneficiaries in the third week of August.
He said his office was engaged in thoroughly screening the applications as girls belonging to Above Poverty Line (APL) families had also applied under the scheme.
