Police said Ghulam Mohiuddin, a candidate in Machipora Zaingeer village, 65 km from Srinagar, was fired at from close range.

"He was immediately evacuated to the Sopore sub-district hospital for treatment where doctors said he had sustained a bullet wound in his leg. His condition is stated to be out of danger," police here said.

The Sopore developmental block goes to vote June 12.

The multi-phased panchayat elections are being held across Jammu and Kashmir state after a gap of 10 years.

Massive voter participation has marked the six phases of these elections held so far; 10 more phases are still to go.

Instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs), ballot boxes and paper ballots are being used as there is no provision of using EVMs in the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act.
