The six-member panel was in the city for an on-the-spot survey of the river and pollutants being discharged from the tanneries. The committee members reached Hotel Landmark at 12.30 pm for a meeting with senior officials of the district administration. But much to their dismay, no official was present to brief them. When the team members solicited information about the level of water in the river Ganga, no official of the Irrigation Department was present to answer their question.
Enraged over the indifferent attitude of the district administration, members of the High Power Committee came out of the hotel and staged a sit-in on the road in front of the hotel.
One of the members of the committee Onkar Nath Tripathi stated that the non-cooperation of the district administration officials tantamount to contempt of the court. “The indifferent attitude of officials will be reported to the High Court. It is nothing less than contempt of the High Court’s order,” added Tripathi.
owever, in the afternoon senior officials of the district administration accompanied the team for an on the spot survey of the Kalindi river in Farrukhabad.
It is worth mentioning that Harchetan Bramhachari Maharaj of Teekar Mati Ashram filed a writ at the Allahabad High court in 2005 expressing concern over increasing level of pollution in the river Ganga.
The two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court AN Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan is hearing the case.
