New findings show that adolescents who do not get enough sleep are likely to have suicidal thoughts. While adults need eight hours of sleep, experts recommend that adolescents sleep nine hours every night.Less sleep affects their thinking, performance and behaviour.
Artery hardens early in diabetes There’s evidence that atherosclerosis — hardening of the arteries — starts early in youngsters with type-1 diabetes, underscoring the need to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol in adolescents. Dr Wendy Mack of the University of Southern California measured the thickness of the wall of the carotid artery — in people with type 1 diabetes, in a comparison group of age-matched non-diabetic “controls.”
