Jammu and Kashmir Opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Friday urged the state government to register an FIR on the mysterious deaths of two women in Shopian town, 52 km from Srinagar, in south Kashmir.
"Unless an FIR is filed, the entire response by the government on the issue will continue to look dubious," PDP
said in a statement in Srinagar on Friday.
On Thursday's statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that he would press entire administration into action to find
out the truth in the case, the statement said it was 'an attempt on the part of the government to divert attention from
the real issue'.
Not the entire administration, but the Shopian police alone have to perform what is their fundamental duty. Unless
police registers the case and takes up investigation seriously, no amount of assurances would work, it said.
The party also demanded the government to make public the autopsy report of the two girls.
Bodies of Nelofer (22) and her sister-in-law Asiya (17) were recovered from a stream on Saturday last after they went
missing from their orchards in Shopian town the previous evening, sparking off massive protest in the valley which left
at least one person dead and scores injured.
