People are divided over whether infighting has delivered a blow to the Aam Admi Party (AAP) within three weeks of forming the government in Delhi, show results of a web poll conducted by HT on Thursday.
With Laxmi Nagar MLA Vinod Kumar Binny turning the heat on the party high command and AAP leader Yogendra Yadav saying disciplinary action would be taken against the rebel, HT had asked its readers: “Has infighting hit AAP’s ‘party with a difference’ image?”
As many as 6,754 respondents voted till 11pm. While 51% said ‘yes’, another 47% replied that Binny’s allegations and the subsequent political squabbling will not affect the rookie party. The difference between the two groups is a mere 4%. With no clear winner in sight, 2% of the voters said they were undecided over the issue.
Binny has alleged the AAP was “cheating” the people of Delhi by backtracking on its election promises and termed chief minister Arvind Kejriwal a “dictator”, triggering a sharp response from the party.
What’s more, other AAP leaders such as Captain Gopinath, the Deccan Air founder, has criticised the AAP government for blocking foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.
Even new entrant Tina Sharma has questioned the AAP’s closed-door meetings to zero in on LS poll candidates as five of the seven names “have already been decided”.
With the AAP carrying out a membership drive across the nation and eyeing to emulate its assembly poll success in the 2014 general elections, the controversies have cast a pall on the party.
But, the web poll conducted by HT suggests many still continue to stand behind the AAP and its promise of a corruption-free government in the Capital.
