Petrol in Shimla will now cost Rs 48.61 and diesel Rs 33.05. The decision was taken by the state cabinet in Shimla late on Monday.
The government has decided not to levy value added tax (VAT) on the increased component of the prices of petrol and diesel.
The prices were increased by the central government by Rs 4 and Rs 2 per litre respectively last week.
"The government will have to bear a loss of Rs 168.8 million as a result of this decision," said a government spokesman.
