Filed by a Faridabad resident, Devinder Bhadana, the petition came up for hearing before the division bench comprising chief justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and justice Rakesh Kumar Garg on Thursday, that issued notices for July 5.

The petitioner informed the court that on April 17, 2009, Congress MP Avtar Singh Bhadana had filed an affidavit before the returning officer of elections for the Lok Sabha and had revealed only about one of his two spouses, Mamta Bhadana. The petitioner alleged that at the same time he stood already married to Bimla Bhadana also and had thus committed offence under Section 494 (marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife) of the Indian Penal
Code.

The petitioner informed the court that in 2003, Bimla Bhadana had purchased a scooter and in all the documents for registration of the two-wheeler, she has been mentioned as wife of Avtar Singh Bhadana and the resident of the same address where the MP resides.
