The Congress leader and his son were among those killed at Darbha Ghati Valley, about 35km from Sukma in the restive Bastar region, in an attack by Maoists waiting in ambush as a convoy of Congress leaders returning to Raipur from a rally passed a forested area.

The bodies of Patel and his son were kept at the airport for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to pay their tributes before leaving for Delhi.

The prime minister and the UPA chairperson are set to head straight to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon to enquire after the health of former union minister Vidya Charan Shukla, 84, who received three bullet injuries in the attack.
