Uttar Pradesh police has filed a chargesheet in a local court against controversial MLA Mukhtar Ansari and some others accusing them of inciting violence, rioting and killings during the October communal riots last year that claimed 12 lives.
Thirty-two people including Ansari had been charged with inciting violence and rioting, arson and killings, investigating officer and SHO Rajendra Singh told a news agency in Mau on Wednesday.
According to the chargesheet filed in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ansari, an independent MLA, along with his supporters had fired upon members of the Hindu community with the intention to incite communal violence and set afire shops and houses near Salahabad crossing in the town on October 14 last year.
One Ram Pratap Yadav was killed in the firing while another was injured, the chargesheet said.
One accused in the matter Haji Wakil had been absconding, the SHO said.
He said that a complementary chargesheet would be filed after taking permission of the state government for initiating proceedings against the accused.
The state government had appointed a three-member committee headed by the Revenue Board chairperson Neera Yadav to probe the riots.
Though the committee had submitted its report to the government, it had not yet been made public.
However, according to highly placed sources the report had given a clean chit to Ansari and instead blamed the officials for failing to check the violence.
