Police on Thursday seized 16 kg opium estimated to be worth over Rs 10 lakh in separate incidents in the district and arrested five persons in this connection.
Four persons, alleged members of an inter state gang of smugglers, were arrested from the border area of Shambhu.
The accused were travelling from Delhi to Jalandhar on a Punjab Roadways bus and when they reached the border area, they came out of the bus to attend the nature's call, R S Khatra, SSP Patiala, said.
The group was stopped from proceeding on their journey by a police party on suspicion and on being frisked, 14.5 Kg opium was recovered from them, Khatra said.
The accused were identified as Dinesh Yadav, Mohan Sahe, Manoj Paswan and Shaminder Yadav of Chatura district in Jharkhand.
A case under NDPS Act has been registered against them.
Khatra said the accused confessed to have bought the opium at Rs 40,000 per Kg and were on their way to deliver it to someone in Ferozepur district for Rs 60,000 per kg.
Meanwhile, one Bikramjit Singh of Sanur area was arrested from village Kulemajra on the Devigarh-Pehowa road and 1.5 kg opium was seized from him, the officer said.
