The first incident took place at Garaimari village where one Kohinur Khatun (19) committed “suicide” by consuming poison over a family dispute. However, the Congress claimed that Khatun was killed by her uncles as she wished to vote for the Congress.

The Congress candidate from Domkal constituency, Shoumik Hossain, said, “A few days ago, Kohinur joined our party with her parents. But her uncles are CPI(M) supporters. Yesterday, Kohinur told her uncles that she would cast her vote in my favour and she tried to convince them to do so as well. Today morning when Kohinur was coming to cast her vote at Garaimari booth 155, her uncles and aunts poisoned her. She died on the way to Behrampore.”

In another incident, a youth was murdered at Bharatpur-Sunia village after a drunken brawl. The CPI(M) alleged that the Maoists have a role to play in the murder.

Murshidabad SP BL Meena said, “No one has been arrested yet. In the Domkal case, we are yet to receive a complaint. So far, we haven’t get found any Maoist link in the murder at Bharatpur.”
