Polling for the Shrivardhan and Naigaum assembly by-elections in Maharashtra began on a peaceful note at 8 am on Thursday.

Adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful polling in the two constituencies which would end at 5 pm, official sources said.

Sources said a paid holiday for voters in Naigaum, working in Mumbai and Thane has been declared to enable them cast their votes.

In Shrivardhan, a general holiday has been declared in the constituency, the sources said.

The assembly bypolls were necessitated as two Shiv Sena MLAs quit Assembly and followed former Sena leader Narayan Rane into Congress.

The duo, Kalidas Kolambkar (Naigaum) and Shyam Sawant (Shrivardhan) are contesting as Congress nominees.

The Sena has fielded Shraddha Jadhav and Tukaram Surve against them respectively.
