'Pondicherry tsunami-hit students needn't pay fees'

Children of the tsunami-hit families have been exempted from paying school tuition fees for the remaining part of the current year.

The school education directorate has sent circulars to the privately-managed and government-aided schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal requesting them to exempt children of tsunami hit families from payment of school tuition fees for the remaining part of the current year, Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan said on Friday.

The extensive damage in the coastal villages had deprived the parents of these children of their livelihood and hence the managements were requested to exempt such children from payment of fees, he told reporters in Pondicherry on Friday.
