The constituency comprises the assembly segments of Tirurangadi, Tanur, Tirur, Ponnani, Mankada, Kuttipuram and Perinthalmanna.
Ponnani is rural in character, with fishing and agriculture being the chief means of livelihood. There are a few areas where funds from NRIs have contributed to lifting the economy.
The constituency has been the stronghold of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) since 1977.
From 1957 to 1977, Ponnani was a reserved constituency, it was held by the Marxists. After it was redefined as a general constituency in 1977, the balance of power shifted to the IUML and has remained with the Muslim League till date.
