Sample this: On October 14, out of 90 calls received by the control room staff, only eight were genuine. The rest of them were all prank calls, said a staff manning the control room.

"I receive dozens of such calls every day when the caller suddenly starts hurling choicest of abuses and I am left with no other option, but to hear them," he said.

Surprisingly, most of these callers are children.

"What can we do? We pick up the phone and a child starts abusing from the other end," said another staff member.

The officials said that the number of such calls increase during evening hours.

Keeping in view the gravity of the situation, the police department has released a press note on Saturday, warning such prank callers of stringent action.

"We warn such elements not to disturb our staff and divert their attention by making prank calls. Such pranks will not be tolerated in future and strict action will be taken against pranksters after identifying their numbers," Joint Police Commissioner AK Rao said.

"You can't imagine. Out of 100 calls, around 50 callers remain silent, wasting the time of our staff members on duty in the control room," Rao added.

"We do not want to spoil the careers of young children and teenagers, who are mostly found making such calls. So, we are warning them to resist form such mischievous activities or else we will be compelled to take strong action," the JCP added.
