The relatives of a 26-year-old pregnant woman, who died after an abortion operation, have accused a private maternity home in Kalwa of negligence. Four-and-a-half months pregnant Muskan Bharmar, a resident of Manisha Nagar in Kalwa, had been admitted to Chaubal Hospital after she complained of severe stomach cramps on Thursday.

“The doctors suggested that she be operated immediately. After the operation, the authorities said Muskan’s condition was serious and she should be shifted to some other hospital. We took her to the nearby Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead, making us suspect that the doctors at Chaubal already knew that,” said Majid Bharmar, Muskan’s brother-in-law.

“The doctors wasted a lot of time in releasing my wife to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital. Also, the doctor who was conducting the autopsy at Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital left it midway, saying the case was too complex and could be handled only by a senior doctor,” said Mansoor, Muskan’s husband.

“I have done all I could for my patient in the situation, there was nothing more I could do,” said Dr Nutan Chaubal of Chaubal Hospital, who operated on Muskan.

The Kalwa police have registered an accidental death report case against the maternity home. “We are waiting for the autopsy report,” said VB Desai, senior inspector, Kalwa.
