Addressing the media in Bangalore after announcing the global software major's first quarter (April-June) financial results, he also advocated “ruthless action” against last week's violence at Maruti’s Manesar plant in which a senior manager was killed and several others injured.

“The government should act ruthlessly while dealing with such incidents to ensure that such incidents never happen anywhere,” he said.

The normally reticent Premji, who had a few months ago criticised the PM and the central government for the perceived policy paralysis, is the second heavyweight corporate leader to back the Prime Minister over the last few days.

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata had similarly defended the PM last week.

Premji said more than policy initiatives, the government should systematically implement existing policies.

“The government should focus on large areas where decisions need to be implemented, and on infrastructure projects or government projects, which are on stream and need to be accelerated,” he said.

Admitting that it was difficult for him to predict how new policy initiatives would roll out, Premji lauded Singh for taking over the finance portfolio in addition to his responsibilities as the prime minister after president-elect Pranab Mukherjee relinquished the portfolio.
