Viktor Yanukovych's pro-Russian party was leading with 33 per cent of votes in the Ukrainian parliamentary election, an independent exit poll said on Sunday.

The exit poll puts the Party of the Regions, leading the field with over 33 per cent, followed by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc with about 23 per cent, and President Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine bloc with less than 14 per cent.

The Democratic Initiatives, International Institute of Sociology and Razumkov Center surveyed 18,000 voters from 300 precincts across the nation.

Another exit poll, conducted by the Ukrainian Sociological Service, gave the Party of Regions a 27.5 per cent lead, and showed Tymoshenko's bloc in second place with 21.6 per cent. Our Ukraine was given 15.6 per cent.
