During the period of suspension, Prof Rai will be attached with the incharge of the university students’ welfare section.

SP Singh had lodged an FIR against Prof Rai. He had accused Prof Rai of assaulting him and issuing threats to kill him. Cantonment police registered a case against Prof Rai under Sections 379, 353, 332, 452 and 7 of the Criminal Act on February 24.

Sources said the suspension was ordered after a missive from principal secretary, Higher Education, Rajiv Kumar recommended stern action.

An 11-member committee was constituted to probe allegations and counter-allegations levelled by Prof Rai and SP Singh.

Sources said Prof Mehfuzurrehman would head the probe committee. Prof Surendra Kumar Singh of Lucknow University will be a member of the committee.
Governor TV Rajeswar, who was here on March 10, had expressed displeasure over the scuffle between Prof Rai and SP Singh. He had hinted at stern action against Prof Rai.

In a meeting with heads of departments and senior university officials, the Governor expressed shock over misbehaviour with the finance officer. He said such incidents brought a bad name to the university. He had directed Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar to maintain an atmosphere conducive for academic activity.

Meanwhile, the silence of the University Teachers’ Association on the issue has become a subject of debate.

Retired professors and lecturers said the association had lost its relevance, as it was not able to support teachers harassed by a group of university officials and police personnel.
