The efforts will not only help in creating awareness among farmers about the cultivation of bamboo but will also increase the forest cover.

"We will be making efforts to motivate farmers and local residents for cultivating various species of bamboo including dendrocalamus strictus and bamboosa species which are easily available and are best suited to the land of the Eastern UP", said Deputy Conservator of Forest, Birendra Choudhary.

The work of generating awareness among farmers and other growers will be carried out through training, demonstration and education programmes where they will be given information about various uses of bamboo, said Choudhary.

"At the training programmes and workshops, we will inform the farmers about planting techniques, utilisation and marketing of bamboo", said Choudhary.

Besides, they will be informed about the advantages of bamboo cultivation including reclamation of waste land by growing bamboo.

The farmers can use bamboo for building houses and can also earn money by selling the bamboo products, he said.

Not only this, it is quite economical to grow bamboo as it can easily grow on barren land, he said.

The bamboo cultivation will have no adverse effect on the cultivation of other crops, said Choudhary, adding that the cultivation of bamboo can help in poverty alleviation of the farmers of Eastern UP.

The project has been sanctioned by the Indian Council Of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE).

Site for the project is yet to be decided, but we are planning to carry it out either in villages of Allahabad or in adjoining districts.

"Work on the project will start within a couple of weeks and we have to achieve the target by 2009", said Choudhary.
