Protests hit train services in Calicut-Mangalore area

Train services in the Calicut-Mangalore section of Southern Railway were severely affected on Monday following the 'rail-roko' agitation by the DYFI, youth wing of CPI(M), in various stations in North Kerala to protest hike in petrol and disel prices.

Several trains, including Ernakulam-bound Mangala Express, Thiruvananthapuram-bound Netravati Express and Trichi Express, were stranded at various stations from Manjeshwaram to Thalassery in North Kerala, railway sources in Kannur said.

Protests were staged in Thalasseri, Kannur, Payyannur, Kanhangad and Manjeshwaram, affecting hundreds of passengers, the sources said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the demonstrations that began around 8.30 am, police said adding no untoward incidents were reported from any places.
