A week after a government-run hospital in Assam was accused of providing HIV-contaminated blood to patients comes another 'medical' shocker — surgery with shaving blades.
The health department on Friday raided the chamber of Manowara Khatun at Juria in central Assam's Nagaon district after she said she had operated on two women for gall bladder stone and appendicitis.
A 'god-gifted healer', Khatun said she used shaving blades. Her 'patients' confirmed the operation, saying they were 'feeling well' after taking turns on Khatun's operating table.
Khatun, 35, said she has been prescribing medicines after dropping out of high school but never tried surgery until recently. She however denied the surgery bit after local health officials raided her chamber.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said stern action would be taken against Khatun if found guilty of medical malpractice. A Nagaon district health officer said, "We have not yet found anything to suggest she performed surgeries."
