QWe are a couple with two children of around 6 years. We wish to visit Shimla-Sangla-Manali through Jalori Pass. Is Jalori Pass open in middle of March 2011?

A Usually the Jalori Pass opens some time during mid-April to the first week of May. However, we were there in 2009, around the first week of April and the pass was open. It is like taking a chance if you are travelling in March. You can only decide after reaching Shimla. This mainly depends on the extent of snowfall in the area. I suggest that you start by March end and be there in the first week of April.

Secondly, I would like to advise you to hire a Qualis or Sumo for the entire journey, since there is no direct bus plying through Jalori Pass.

You can start from Shimla on first day and reach Narkanda (64 km). Check in at a hotel in Narkanda and try to visit Hatu Peak (8 km). It’s advisable to hire a local vehicle since the road to the peak is very narrow. The sight from the top of the peak is very beautiful. There is a small temple at the top and one can enjoy a 270-degree breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains.
